“The BRA and the City of Boston have been working on energy efficiency initiatives as a step towards achieving the City’s ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. The BRA has instituted LEED certification requirements for large buildings and successfully implemented E+ Energy Positive building and community projects.

To promote this cause and make it more visible, my supervisor and I organized a discussion on Net Zero Energy building practices and understanding the costs associated with them. The discussion was attended by over 70 professionals and students. Speakers included Lisa Fay Matthiessen of Integral Group, Alex Pollard of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER), and Fran Boucher from National Grid.

Later in the week I made a site visit to one of these E+ homes in Roxbury and met with the owner to document his experiences and sustainable lifestyle. It was a great learning experience to see how innovative ideas can be implemented and successfully put to fruition.”
