Summer 2018

Organization: The Garden School Foundation, Los Angeles, CA

Sponsor: Joint Center for Housing Studies Community Service Fellowship

“This week has been a wonderful combination of both direct community engagement and organizing, in tandem with back-end land use law and planning. At the 24th Street urban farm site, I’ve been working to expanding the foundation’s reach to locations in Rockdale and Wilshire Crest. At the same time, I have also been researching and creating a comprehensive legal document which outlines the bylaws of a community shared urban space dedicated to the cultivation of food and community. This has been a fascinating process. The bylaws must be in compliance with the Los Angeles Urban Agriculture Ordinance, but it’s also the organization’s intent to move away from a fee-based model and towards a service hour model for community buy-in. I am continually excited to being participating in the planning, visioning, and building of this site. “
