” Most frequently at Hester Street, clients are New York City agencies or other community-based organizations. Rarely is the client the community itself. However, for our Making Gowanus project, the clients are neighborhood residents. The grant-funded project aims to connect artists living in public housing in Gowanus, Brooklyn with the broader arts community there. Both the neighborhood as a whole and the public housing developments in Gowanus are home to many talented artists; however, there are few bridges between the two groups of creatives.
The first milestone of this project is an upcoming performance and artist showcase at BRIC (a Brooklyn cultural venue) produced and performed by public housing residents. A steering committee consisting of public housing residents, directors of local arts-based organizations, and New York City council member office representatives are collaborating to organize and put on the show.
Our intention is that these connections and this momentum continues beyond the show, which will take place in early September. We hope that this is not just a one-off but is a means by which to build the capacity to collaborate in this arts-rich neighborhood.
