“Zaatari, the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, hosted approximately 200,000 displaced refugees at its peak in 2013, making it Jordan’s fourth largest city at that time. How do you provide food, water, shelter, electricity, legal enforcement, education, and government for a “temporary” settlement that would double in size every month? This week marks the launch of an instant cities project, where Community Service Fellow, Joyce (MUP ’15), will explore the logistics behind post-disaster, post-conflict, and other temporary housing settlements.”
