“I had so much fun being a Community Service Fellow with the Madison Square Park Conservancy this summer. Although this wasn’t specific to my involvement with the Arts department, a major highlight was being part of Mad Sq. Chefs, a fundraiser for the park with food from restaurants from all around the neighborhood. I got to try this amazing burrata with truffles that I still think about all the time! The conservancy raises 100 percent of the funds to take care of the park on their own, so events like the fundraiser are central to their mission. Because of their dedicated work, Madison Square Park is one of the cleanest parks in New York City and has a constant rotation of top-notch public programs. Seeing the behind-the-scenes for planning the programs and the amount of work it takes to plan the fundraisers to support the park events was really rewarding. I was able to observe how every aspect of the park operations is crucial in the success of the park.
On my last day in the office ,there was also a GSD meetup at Cedric’s at The Shed. I walked over with Ryu Kim, a GSD graduate who also works at the conservancy. Getting to know her and talk to her about her path since her time at the GSD was so much fun. It was comforting to unexpectedly run into someone from the GSD during my internship. Ending my summer with a GSD cocktail party seemed really fitting and was a nice way to wrap up my summer experience.
Because of this internship, I have definitely broadened the scope of places I would like to intern with in the future and ways I can be involved in the art world. As much as I enjoyed the research, I really missed making models and being creative this summer. In the future, I’m going to look into internships that offer the same level of intellectual dialog and research with an opportunity to produce creative work. I was so inspired by all of the art I got to see this summer that I was waiting to get back to school to incorporate these ideas into my work.”
