“Atlantic Philanthropies and MASS Design Group, in collaboration with the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, announced in October 2014 a new partnership to develop a rigorous assessment tool to enable evaluation of capital investments in building projects.

This summer, as a Community Service Fellow I will be part of the Research Team, investigating the impact of capital projects on the social, economic and environmental fabric of communities.

Specifically:

  •  MASS will develop an exhaustive assessment tool that is capable of capturing the qualitative and quantitative impact of capital investments across a wide array of building typologies and geographical regions.
  •  To test and iteratively refine the tool, MASS will apply the assessment to a total of 15 projects, 10 funded by Atlantic and 5 by Bechtel, resulting in a collection of concise and objective profiles that illustrates the value of ‘brick and mortar’ projects.
  •  Finally, MASS and the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation will develop a prospective assessment guide that will enable more informed investment choices and planning in advance of building groundbreaking.

Once piloted and implemented through evaluation of Atlantic and Bechtel projects, open access of the assessment tool to all stakeholders in the nonprofit sector could provide the field with a helpful set of tools to deliver effective and long-lasting infrastructure”
