Summer 2017

Organization: Boston Department of Neighborhood Development, MA

Sponsor: Joint Center for Housing Studies Community Service Fellowship

” Working with the Mayor’s Housing Innovation Lab at the Department of Neighborhood Development has been a busy and challenging experience so far.

Having the occasional opportunity to see how our work directly impacts residents’ lives is motivating, such as a recent tour of homes rehabbed as part of DND’s Boston Home Center programs.

The Home Center provides no-interest loans to income-qualified homeowners to repair their homes. Dramatic before and after transformations show how powerful the additional funding can be for homeowners.

It was also helpful to learn more about the way the department structures its loans as it relates to one of the projects I’m working on this summer – developing the Accessory Dwelling Unit Pilot Program.

As the city develops this pilot, they are also building a loan program that will incentivize homeowners to take advantage of it. It was especially interesting to see how funds like these are actually used by homeowners, and how the trail of communication about city policies passes from those who make them to those who carry them out and then to city residents.”
