“This is my final Community Service Fellowship blog post. I’ve had an incredible summer interning in the Planning Department of the BRA.

Over the course of this summer, I sat in on a range of community meetings and public hearings. I learned about the BRA’s Community Planning and Waterfront Planning projects and initiatives. I was also able to put together a report on potential retrofitting strategies for existing buildings along the Boston waterfront.  As part of this work, I met with local resiliency experts, researched Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements, and compiled adaptation methods for buildings in today’s 100-year floodplain. The retrofitting report includes five case studies that imagine how current retrofitting strategies might be applied to typical Boston building typologies. These building typologies include 18th and 19th century wharf buildings, 19th and 20th century industrial loft buildings, two-family detached homes, triple-deckers, and contemporary high rises.

As part of the five case studies, I analyzed risk profiles and social vulnerability factors for four neighborhoods in Boston’s Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), including Dorchester, East Boston, the Downtown Waterfront, and the South Boston Waterfront.  I also made recommendations for policy and regulatory interventions that can help address potential conflicts between retrofitting strategies and current zoning codes. The full report will hopefully be published soon on the BRA’s website, intended as a tool to facilitate a conversation about climate change adaptation in Boston.
