“During my internship at UN Habitat I have been conducting research on the local government’s role in the design, implementation and monitoring of sustainable urban development. The results will hopefully serve to stress that local governments are one of the key implementers of urban policies, and are increasingly recognized as a new setting for bottom-up political decision-making that prioritizes the needs of local communities. In this sense, the research seeks to provide data that may help advocate for the recognition of local governments in the New Urban Agenda, both as policy developers and implementers, as well as for greater involvement of local stakeholders in the New Urban Agenda’s process. As an intern at the Local Government and Decentralization Unit I believe that UN Member States should go hand in hand with local governments when developing their own implementation and monitoring instruments in order to efficiently advance sustainable urban development.”
