“Moving forward from the summer, my survey moves on to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and my project travels with me back to GSD. I stopped back home in Houston, one year after Harvey, after others have moved on. Once back in Cambridge, I’ll return to a studio that will take me to Bangladesh.

Moving forward from the workshop this summer, there are some strange takeaways. The Climate Change group is dwindling. Interest diminishes even as severe weather events increase in frequency. A session on the Rohingya crisis drew the largest crowds, and the promise of “never agains” been broken again. The steady confluence of escalating events produces more causal relationships than we know how to discuss, and professionalization of the humanitarian sector seems inevitable.

I said goodbye to some extremely warm, brilliant, driven people that I hope to see again. All the way to the train back from Providence, the conversations continued. After taking an unmarked path t o get here, it was strange and wonderful to be surrounded by so many who work in and study similar pursuits. I wonder if that will happen again and whether the plans we’re bound to continue making will succeed.

Moving forward, I know that there will be greater challenges, for myself and for everyone. Though the hope is for fair winds and following seas, sometimes it seems like all we can do (and should do) is continue learning as much as possible about how to face challenges we know will come. May we all continue doing so.”
