” In the third week of the program, the Track 1 students were split up into two studios to begin working on their summer long design projects. I am leading a studio working on a project in conjunction with Build Health International.
BHI is a non-profit construction and design organization based in Boston that completes healthcare and community development projects in Haiti.
Build Health has asked YouthBuild to help them model a town in rural Haiti where they have constructed a hospital, creating a better tool for community engagement with the local population. A few of the students in my studio are actually Haitian themselves, so this is an exciting opportunity for them to get involved and give back at a young age.
The students started the project with research on Haitian culture, geography, and regional building characteristics and typologies.
They then presented their findings to Gerard Georges, a Haitian born architect in Boston with extensive experience working in Haiti.
Gerard reinforced and provided some insights into their regional architecture research and then gave them his own presentation on the work he has created in Haiti.”
