“Summer is in full swing at Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay! The non-profit organization has a multi-pronged mission that focuses on environmental advocacy while supporting robust educational youth programs. Through offering free programs to the public, underserved communities in Boston are connected to the surrounding natural resources of the Harbor. While COVID 19 has presented challenges, the organization is dedicated to maintaining safe access to Boston Harbor natural resources and community programming. The screenshot above was from a virtual “Better Beaches Grant Program” awards ceremony, where Save the Harbor distributed grant funding to various Boston communities from Nahant to Hull.
As a Community Service Fellow at the organization, my work will advance research that explores current and future infrastructural conditions of Boston’s metropolitan beaches and their impact on public access. Over the past three weeks, the focus has been on information gathering and mapping existing conditions of the 14 beach sites included within the study. Ultimately, the goal of this project will be to build a dialogue around the future of public beach resources as environments are altered by sea level rise and climate change.”
